Robert Gilbert began his theatre career in 1981 as a trainee actor for Prospect Theatre Company in Hamilton. He spent the next seven years performing mostly Theatre-in-education, touring schools around New Zealand. He also performed in many main-bill productions for Prospect Theatre Company, Bankside Theatre Company, Troupers, The Christchurch Arts Network, The Court Theatre, and in several television programmes for TVNZ.
His writing and directing credits include productions for The Christchurch Arts Network, Whakarite Theatre Company, Excalibur’s Theatre Restaurant and Aranui High School. He has taught drama for St Julian’s English School in Portugal, The Polynesian Performing Arts Trust, Troupers Stage School, and The Christchurch Drama Centre.
Over the last decade, Robert has had regular radio shows on C93FM, Classic Hits, Lite FM, and The Breeze. Currently, Robert is Head of Drama at Aranui High School and recently launched Aranui Theatre Company. Robert also directs for Repertory Theatre and The Forge at The Court Theatre.
He has a Bachelor of Arts (Education) degree from Massey University, where he occasionally tutors, and a Graduate Diploma of Teaching and Learning from Christchurch College of Education.
